Euro Gold Launches Yumbe Mining Operations, Targets 80kg Monthly Gold Production

Euro Gold Refinery has officially commenced mining and processing operations in Yumbe District, strengthening its commitment to responsible mineral development, local value addition and the continued growth of Uganda’s gold industry.

The operation was officially launched in Komo Village, Yumbe District, by Uganda’s Minister of State for Mineral Development, Hon. Phiona Nyamutoro, on August 20, 2026.

The launch brought together government officials, mining-sector stakeholders, community leaders and representatives of Euro Gold as machinery at the site was commissioned to begin operations.

Building Uganda’s Gold Value Chain

Euro Gold’s Yumbe operation represents another important stage in the company’s expansion from gold refining into organised mineral extraction and processing.

Euro Gold Chief Executive Officer Benard Feni said the company is targeting production of approximately 20 kilograms of gold per week, equivalent to about 80 kilograms per month once the operation reaches its projected capacity.

The project follows more than two years of exploration and technical preparation, including geological, geochemical and geophysical surveys as well as drilling activities undertaken to establish the potential of the mining area.

The company’s concession covers approximately 79 square kilometres in Yumbe District, positioning the project as a significant investment in the mineral potential of Uganda’s West Nile region.

More Than 1,000 Jobs Expected

The Yumbe project is expected to create more than 1,000 employment opportunities across the mining value chain, including extraction, processing, value addition and supporting activities.

A strong emphasis is also being placed on local participation.

More than 70% of workers at the operation are locally sourced, reflecting Euro Gold’s commitment to ensuring that communities surrounding its operations participate directly in the economic opportunities generated by mineral development.

The company is also working to bring artisanal miners operating within its licence area into a more organised structure that complies with Uganda’s mining regulations.

Advancing Responsible and Sustainable Mining

During the launch, Hon. Nyamutoro highlighted the importance of responsible mineral development and recognised the project as an example of the transformation taking place within Uganda’s mining sector.

The operation has also attracted attention for its mercury-free processing approach, an important development as Uganda works toward safer and more sustainable mining practices.

The minister emphasised that mining investments should create employment and economic opportunity while maintaining high standards for occupational safety, environmental responsibility and regulatory compliance.

Supporting Yumbe and the Wider West Nile Region

Beyond mineral production, the Yumbe operation is expected to contribute to the surrounding community through employment, economic activity and future corporate social responsibility programmes.

Government and local leaders have encouraged Euro Gold to prioritise local youth in recruitment while supporting development in areas such as infrastructure, healthcare and education.

The project also forms part of Uganda’s broader effort to develop West Nile’s mineral resources and expand domestic mineral value addition.

From Mining to Refining

The Yumbe operation complements Euro Gold Refinery’s licensed gold-refining operations in Kampala, strengthening the company’s participation across multiple stages of the gold value chain — from extraction and processing to refining and value addition.

Through continued investment in modern technology, responsible mining practices and local participation, Euro Gold remains committed to contributing to the formalisation and development of Uganda’s mineral industry.

The Yumbe project represents another milestone in that journey and reinforces the company’s vision of building a transparent, organised and internationally competitive gold sector in Uganda.
